The Aerospace Robotics Competition is for middle and high school students, so some of the people our work reaches are children. This notice explains how we handle information about them, in addition to our Privacy Policy. It is written with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar state laws in mind.
1We do not ask children under 13 for personal information#
- Team registration is completed by the coach, an adult. Students do not register themselves.
- The gate-run leaderboard asks the person posting a time to confirm they are 13 or older, and does not accept an entry without that confirmation.
- The contact, volunteer and sponsorship forms are meant for adults.
- The flight game and code lab on the home page can be played without giving any personal information. A best lap time is kept only in the player's own browser.
2Information about students that coaches provide#
When a coach registers a team, they give us the team captain's name and email and, optionally, the school and grade levels. We use this only to run the competition: to communicate about the season and events, place teams in divisions and contact the team. We do not use it for advertising, do not sell it and do not share it except as our Privacy Policy describes for running the competition.
If a team captain is under 13, we ask that the coach give a parent or guardian's email or the coach's own email in the captain email field instead of the child's.
3Waivers and photos#
Every student needs a participant waiver signed by a parent or guardian before taking part in an event. The waiver records the parent or guardian's choices, including whether STEM-ED may use photos or video of the student. We do not publish a photo or video of a student without a current waiver that permits it.
4If we learn we have a child's information by mistake#
If we learn that we collected personal information directly from a child under 13 without a parent or guardian's consent, for example a leaderboard entry, we will delete it promptly. If you believe this has happened, write to support@stemed.org.
5What parents and guardians can do#
A parent or guardian can ask to see the information we hold about their child, have it corrected or deleted, or withdraw consent for further use. Write to support@stemed.org or STEM-ED, Inc., 574 Parish Blvd., Mary Esther, FL 32569. We will confirm that the request comes from the child's parent or guardian before acting and answer within 30 days. Deleting a registered student's information may mean the team cannot take part in an event that needs it.
6Analytics and advertising#
We do not show advertising and do not allow advertising networks on this site. Visitor analytics are off. If we turn them on, they will run only with consent given in a banner, will not build profiles across other websites, and will not collect device fingerprints.
